Day 2:  Night-time on the Island  Our arrival at Useppa Island was smooth and we were greeted via our VHF radio, that we now know how to operate, by the Dockmaster as he departed on the last shuttle off the island.  So we docked the Suki Sweet II in the marina that housed only 2 other boats.  It was nightfall when we began our walk along the sandy path.  The plants and foliage were all of a tropical nature with the most gorgeous banyon tree rooting on either side of the ‘pink’ sidewalk.  Yes, this island has a pink walkway from end to end.  We crossed the pink walkway and headed out toward the east side of the island where local homeowners enjoyed a cocktail party by moonlight.  They were kind enough to direct us to the Collier Inn, where we would dine.

Once in, it reminded us of the Rod & Gun Club in Everglades City – a place we happened upon by chance and fell in love with, much like Useppa Island.  Both places were originally founded by Barron Collier, both have an Izaak Walton Dining Room, and the Collier Inn has an Izaak Walton Room in it’s bed and breakfast.  Of course, Richard and I had our photo taken beneath the wall-plaque for all to see.  We were greeted by Victor who is in charge of food and beverage on the island and he gave us a bit of a history lesson about the island.   Victor was also kind enough to give us a night-time tour of the island.

Useppa was founded back in the early 1900’s and acquired by it’s most recent owners in 1976.  All the homes are white, and have a ‘cottage design.'  What a coincidence that our 3 favorite places in Florida, all have roots back to Izaak Walton.   We spent the morning with Terry White who shared with us how we,  too, could be owners on this gorgeous island.  It would be hard ever leave our beloved Yankeetown.  We did learn that a dock membership is possible. We’ll see… Until tomorrow.

Love,
Leslie & Richard Dasch
