A Week In Key West PDF Print E-mail

We’ve now been in Key West for a week, and we’re getting into our vacation routine.  Each morning we awaken around 6:30am and head out on our still-shiny red bicycles.  The salt air is already causing a little rust in the nuts and bolts so we have to polish our bikes daily.  We have been heading over to the south east side of the island where they have a monument depicting the southern-most point in the US.  It states that from that point, Cuba is just a short 92 miles.  I would share a photo of this painted concrete erection with you, however we would have had to wait in line on the side-walk with about 100 tourists, most of them Japanese, as they stood patiently to have their pictures taken by one another at this point.  We rode out onto the pier and enjoyed the fresh breezed instead.

We then stop for crepes or quiche at one of the many patisseries.  We have been searching for a locals spot where they serve the best Cuban coffee, according to our friends Tom and Susan, and think we found it today.  So tomorrow we’ll head there.  The search has given us cause to peddle all over the island.  Key West has some charming neighborhoods and the brightly colored cottages are so quaint.

We spent another day fishing, this time with our friend Dennis.  (See photos of our catch) He and Richard competed for best catch all day while I listened on and chuckled at their bantering.   It was decided that quantity of fish caught, not quality, mattered most.  In light of this, we had more than enough Porgies fish for a feast.  Last night we went to Dennis’ home on Stock Island where he prepared the Porgies with fresh basil and herbs from his garden.  It was delicious.  We enjoyed great conversation and good wine by candlelight on the porch.  It was a perfect evening.

By the way, it turns out the cause for “Lights-Out” in all of Key West on Christmas night was the result of some sort of creature, perhaps it was a raccoon or maybe an elf.  The lights came back on after about an hour.
